With new Spider-Man and Bumblebee movies currently hitting theaters, it’s the perfect time to welcome our first guest for Retro Con 2019: Dan Gilvezan!

An actor for nearly 40 years, Dan is probably best known in the retro realm as the voice of the original Bumblebee on G1 Transformers! Dan voiced the small but audacious Autobot in nearly 45 episodes of the original G1 cartoon, as well as the 1986 feature film, and more recently in the Transformers: Devastation video game (2015)! The character has been a fan-favorite through numerous incarnations of the Transformers fiction and toy line since his debut.

“The least likely can be the most dangerous.”

And not to be upstaged by a Volkswagen, Dan has another huge role for retro fans: Spider-Man!! Dan voiced the webslinger (as well as alter ego Peter Parker) throughout 24 episodes of NBC’s Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends Saturday morning cartoon show! Though the show didn’t have a long episode run, it made its mark as one of the most remembered versions of Spider-Man to date, due to excellent voice acting and the rapport between characters Spidey, Iceman, and Firestar!

“Spider Friends: GO FOR IT!!”

Dan also voiced other Transformers characters in the G1 series such as Hotspot, Outback, Scamper, Snapdragon, and Goldbug (the rebuilt version of Bumblebee). Other animation roles include Prince Dargon on Sectaurs, Slip Stream on GI Joe, Sean Harrison on Jem, and Cooler on Pound Puppies. Dan was also the onscreen spokesperson for west coast-based restaurant chain Jack in the Box from 1981 to 1986!

Dan is also an author! Dan has written an eclectic assortment of books over the past decade, all available on Amazon. One book of note is Bumblebee & Me: Life as a G1 Transformer! The book details Dan’s years of recording for the G1 Transformers cartoon series and animated movie, and gives insight into the process of voice acting and his interactions with fellow voice actors of the era. Dan will have the book for sale at his table at Retro Con. It’s a fantastic read for any Transformers fan, and the cover art was done by Retro Con’s very own Rosemary Ward Tuski! 😉

Dan will be at the show all weekend, so stop by his table in the guest section to meet the voice of your childhood!!

“Showtime, Synergy!”

We’re excited to announce our first guest for Retro Con 2018: Voice actor and singer Samantha Newark! Samha is best known for giving voice to one of the most iconic characters of the 80’s: Jem!

Through secret technology developed by her late father, young adult Jerrica Benton uses special earrings to communicate with supercomputer Synergy, allowing her to assume the holographic identity of mysterious rockstar… Jem!

As lead singer of  The Holograms, the band created eclectic rock music, with much of the sale proceeds going to Starlight House, a home for orphaned and homeless girls.

Samantha voiced the character through all 65 episodes of the Sunbow cartoon series, with performer Britta Phillips providing vocals for the song portions of the show. The show was hugely popular in the mid to late 80’s, and has a devoted fanbase to this day. And recent re-airings of the series on cable have brought new fans into the fold!

Samantha also took part in one of the most significant episodes of the G1 Transformers cartoon. She voiced Autobot “Ariel” in Wardawn, a flashback episode that revealed the origin of  legendary Autobot Leader Optimus Prime! Ariel herself would later be rebuilt into the powerful leader of the female Autobots: Elita-One!

Another noteworthy project of Samantha’s was performing lead vocals for the song “In Your Eyes” from the classic 1986 anime film Project A-ko! The song was included in both the original japanese and international versions of the movie.

And for an added treat, Samantha has kindly agreed to be a guest judge this year at Retro Con’s annual Truly Outrageous Karaoke Contest, making this year’s contest Truly, Truly, Truly Outrageous!!
